IA#CX73545

A draft and initial play through of an interactive structure… once I’ve worked out the flow in Twine, will likely re-program it in processing + flash. Play IA#CX73545 AUTHOR’S STATEMENT / IA#CX73545 IA#CX73545 is an interactive Twine game I created. It follows the activities of an intergalactic anthropologist (Journee) on a research mission to Earth from multiple vantage points. Journee’s Earth mission is a ruse to ascertain the location of two activists-turned-terrorists (Auden & Aiden), known for undermining the political infrastructure of their galaxy. A secondary objective of Journee’s mission is to test the military grade alien camouflage she was given to appear human. Journee is unaware of both objectives, believing she was sent to Earth in an official capacity to study human language. With the collapse of Auden & Aiden’s planet, resulting in a civilization of asylum seekers scattered around the universe, Auden’s Earth exile begins to catalyze his increasing political prominence across the galaxies, as he attempts to unite his people and evade the authorities. The story takes the form of Journee’s autoethnographic …

cyborg texts

As a cyborg writer, I really like the volume and expansiveness of ideas the text generators allow. The randomness of the text generators and the Memory Slam text editors really allow you to explore different approaches to a poem while maintaining the same structure. With the N+7 text generator, I used a poem that I wrote and compiled a second poem constructed from fragments of the N+7 output. I then ran the revised poem through the text generator again. The second N+7 output was far more interesting in cohesively random the verses were this time. Running the poems through a the eDiastic program, using the same original poem, led to a very different poetic structure, which had a range of similar ambiguities, but followed a consistent poetic structure. Using Nick Monfort’s Memory Slam section, I chose to modify the stochastic texts program, using various characters and characteristics from a range of sci-fi poetry/ short stories I have been developing. Through working on this over a period of time, I find this becomes really amusing or …

my business skills

Something I wrote to explain what skills I bring to the table in starting my own business…   My competitive advantage centres on uncovering human texture. I seem to be a natural researcher — delving into all the relevant data, identifying gaps, designing methodologies to fill those gaps, etc. Sitting in people’s houses, rummaging through cupboards, closets and fridges to understand their daily habits, then exploring how they process, relate and react to broader issues affecting their lives. My role has (primarily) been to connect human insight and creativity in ways that fuelled ideas for multinational advertising clients. In the 1990s, amidst the Quebec referendum, most big multinationals were harmonizing their North American strategies. In Canada, this meant strengthening team understanding of differences between Quebec, English Canada and US consumers in needs, behaviour and attitudes; then highlighting how these variances should impact communication strategies to achieve business targets. My approach was to continuously induce paradigm shifts using client data as a means to influence how our client’s research, marketing and media budgets were spent. I …

karmic residue

A draft of a screenplay I’ve been working on… related to the celestial navigations mobile app design. in pursuit of social change

This essay analyzes the construction and filmmaking approach used in “Cidade de Deus” (referred to as City of God throughout), a 2002 Brazilian film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same title, by Paulo Lins. The film was an international commercial success, receiving widespread critical acclaim, sweeping the awards of international festivals in 2002-2003. The film illuminates the darkest corners Rio’s favela’s in the 1960s – 1980s, raising the invisibility cloak on its most vulnerable inhabitants — the children who are brought into gangs, drug trafficking and who ultimately become victims of gun violence at a young age. While there does not appear to be clear quantifications of the film’s impact, nor its ability to garner social change (particularly for residents of the favelas), the construction of the film/ story can be credited (at least in part) in catalyzing much needed dialogue in Brazil and abroad about the social crises central to the film. The term ‘favela’ refers to highly populated urban agglomerations that emerged in Rio …

celestial navigations

mobile app This mobile app is an attempt to simplify the task of tracing Indo-Trinidadian ancestry, by making archival records more accessible. This task only became possible in 2011, when the indentureship records were made available to the public through support from UNESCO’s Memory of the World Program. The records, however, are still not easily accessible due to the historical structure of the colonial registers. Trying to trace family ancestry usually requires oscillating between the national archives (Trinidad & Tobago) and elder family members. With relatives dispersed around the world, it is common for such a project span North America/ Europe and the Caribbean, and take several years to complete the project. Incomplete information at each point of contact requires multiple trips. When gathering information at various points of contact, it would be beneficial to have access to a summary of various archival records/ fonds (ie. ship arrival dates/details, maps of plantations with workforce info, etc) to help narrow towards the most accurate date range to focus on when you do eventually delve into the national archives. Even when at the …

a viable model

It’s one thing to question your mind. It’s another to question your eyes and ears. But, then again, isn’t it all the same? Are senses just mediocre inputs for our brain? Sure, we rely on them, trust that they accurately portray the real world around us, but what if the haunting truth is, they can’t? That, what we perceive isn’t the real world at all, but just our mind’s best guess. ~ Elliot Alderson This essay focuses on Mr. Robot, a television series equivalent of an indie film, whose first season is said to have pushed boundaries and captured the cultural zeitgeist, almost overnight. Its first season ratings established it as the #3 most watched scripted cable drama in the US, garnering multiple awards and nominations — leading to the series being licensed in almost 200 countries (Birnbaum). This essay analyzes the strategies employed, deconstructs the elements contributing to its success, and explores why the series may be a model for future television properties moving forward.    The series is about a hacker genius whose …
